| Transportation - Bicycles & Motor Cycles | ||||
| Project 405440 - Into Africa Bicycles > Cost: US$ 170 per Bicycle, Delivered > Click Here for Case Study |
Trainers are responsible to visit their 15 student pastors on a regular basis in their villages to mentor and supervise new church plants. Churches are generally spaced three to five miles (five and eight km) apart from each other. Bicycles greatly increase the mobility of trainers, and give them greater time to mentor and counsel trainee pastors. Trainers can gain between eight and 12 hours per week with the use of a bicycle. Bicycles are also given to bi-vocational student pastors, who typically spend 12 to 20 hours walking per week. A bicycle would typically cut this time by at least 50%, saving pastors between six and ten hours per week. This time that could be well used in evangelizing, discipling and counseling activities. As of the end of 2008, the Into Africa Project had 191 trainers and 3,839 village pastors in 18 African countries. |
| Project 404540 - Into Africa Motor Cycles > Cost: US$ 2,800 per Motor Cycle, Delivered > Click Here for Case Study |
Motor cycles are generally given to VCP country coordinators who are responsible for giving oversight to between foiur and seven training centers. These training centers are in distinct geographic regions of a country, and can lie between 40 and 80 miles (70 and 130 km) apart from each other. It is the responsibility of the coordinators to visit and supervise the trainees, and generally this is done by a combination of public transport and walking. A coordinator can spend up to 40% of his day in travel, with a large part waiting on public transport. The provision of motor cycles would reduce coordinator travel by 10 to 15 hours per week, freeing up time that can be used for other ministry-related activities. As of December 2008, the Into Africa Project had 38 coordinators in 18 African countries. |
